Today, Jon and I are working on a piece of furniture. I found it on the side of the road and didn't want to see it go into a landfill. The piece is made of solid wood and particle board with veneer. The point is not to restore an expensive piece of furniture, rather to take a functional piece and make it attractive once more. I have no space in my home for it, so we'll be selling it once the work is done.

The original nightstand. The top is water damaged, the veneer on is missing on two edges. Still, it's an adorable piece of vintage mid-century. |
|
The original drawer. One side is missing. The handle is corroded. |
|
The stand with the finish removed and the veneer replaced. We did not sand the interior, as we plan to paint it white. |
|
We created a template from the existing drawer side, then cut a blank. The holes were not a true dovetail, as they were round with a flanged front. Eventually, we were able to whittle the shape properly. |
|
First coat of paint on the interior. The drawer now has a new side. Once the glue is dry, the drawer side will be sanded and bevelled with a Dremel. |
I just wanted to let you know that I almost decided not to follow you because you are making awesome things with your hands and I am jealous! Can't wait to see the finished nightstand!
ReplyDeleteI also want to let you know that I have included you on my list of David Wong-inspired blogs, here: http://thisblognameisavailable.blogspot.com/2013/01/list-of-wong-inspired-blogs.html
DeletePlease let me know if you want me to remove you/represent you differently! Also, if you know of other blogs that aren't included yet, I'd love to know about them!
Ha! I hope to be inspiring, not intimidating. ;) I've never done this kind of work before, so I'm learning as I go along.
DeleteI'm totally up for all of us supporting each other, so go ahead and keep me on the list. (I also replied on your blog.)
Nightstand update later today. I have to get a sponge brush to even out the interior paint before we stain the outside. Should be interesting.
